    Mossbrae Falls
Rated "9" in California Waterfalls by Ann Marie Brown
  • 9- SPECTACULAR, off I-5 In Dunsmuir
  • ACCESS AND DIFFICULTY: Hike in 3.0 miles (round trip) on an established trail- (EASY).
  • BEST SEASON: Spring fed fall, nice all year around The only way to access the waterfall is to walk 1.5 miles along the railroad tracks upstream from Shasta Retreat in Dunsmuir. There's no room for a foot trail alongside the Sacramento River, so everybody walks along the tracks. That means about 40 minutes of level hiking on the gravel railroad bed, during which it's helpful if a train doesn't happen by, because their colossal noise can ruin the peaceful solitude of your walk. Just be sure to stay clear of the tracks and you'll find the trail just before you reach a steel railroad trestle.
  • DIRECTIONS: From Tsasdi Resort, drive 27.5 miles north on I-5 to Dunsmuir and take the Dunsmuir Avenue/Siskiyou Avenue exit #732. Turn left and cross under the freeway, then turn left again and head into the town of Dunsmuir. In 6/10 of a mile, make a sharp right turn on to Scarlett Way (drive under the arch that is signed "Shasta Retreat.") Bear right at the fork and cross the bridge over the Sacramento River, then cross the railroad tracks and park on the far side along the tracks. Start walking upstream along the tracks. It will take about 25 minutes to reach the falls. If you reach the railroad bridge you have gone too far; the trail to the falls is just before the bridge on the east side of the tracks. Be prepared for a train…there will likely be a train on either your hike in or out of the falls.
    Sweetbriar Falls
  • 6-GOOD: Sacramento River/ Sweetbriar Creek off I-5 near Dunsmuir.
  • ACCESS AND DIFFICULTY: Hike in .25 mile (round trip) by a day-hike on an established trail- (EASY)
  • BEST SEASON: February-June The truth is nobody comes to Sweetbriar Falls just to see the waterfall. It is only about 20 feet tall. And the trek to reach it is little more than 100 yards, so it doesn't exactly make for a great outdoor adventure. Still Sweetbriar falls is sweet.
  • David's Fun Choice: This fall is small and in many ways non-descript. What makes this a must see is the community around the falls. Many of the cabins originally were summer homes for people in Redding to get away from the intense summer heat. It is fun to wander around looking at the houses at this small riverside community.
    McCloud Falls
  • 9-SPECTACULAR Shasta Trinity National Forest off Highway 89 Near McCloud.
  • ACCESS & DIFFICULTY: Hike in 3.5 miles (round trip) by a day on an established trail – (EASY)
  • BEST SEASON: April-August The McCloud Falls consists of 3 different falls, Lower Falls, Middle Falls, and Upper Falls. These Falls are within 2 miles on the McCloud River. These Three trails are linked by a trail, so you can view them all in about an hour.

  • DIRECTIONS: From Tsasdi Resort go north on I-5 30 miles. Take the highway 89/McCloud/Reno exit and drive east on highway 89. Pass the town of McCloud in 9 miles then continue 4.5 further easts to a small Forest Service sign for "River Access." Turn right and follow the signs to the McCloud River Picnic Area and Lower McCloud falls. (Bear right as the road forks, driving past Fowlers Camp.) Park in the day use parking area.
